How to cozy up your home for fall with textiles
With the days getting shorter and the cooler fall temperatures in the air, it’s time to transition indoors. I like to think of fall as my cozy homebody era, and I welcome those nights curled up on the couch with my family. As we prepare ourselves for some quality time indoors, I’m sharing my styling tips to help you settle in and make your homes feel as cozy as possible!
The two elements we’ll be using are simple: textiles and candles. With these easy additions, you can create a comforting space that will be your soft place to land throughout fall and winter.
The power of pillows
First up, let's talk about the power of pillows! One of the most impactful ways to make a room look and feel cozy is to add toss pillows. Toss pillows are an inexpensive way to change up the look of a space and they add so much character to a room! Urban Barn is my go-to source for pillows because of their amazing selection and affordable price-point. When I am trying to create warmth and coziness, I look for pillows in colors like creamy whites, warm caramels and deeper saturated tones. The Bailey pillow comes in so many colors and is a great basic pillow that you can use on your sofa or bed. The Caramel and Woodland colours feel very warm and cozy to me!
The other factor to take into consideration when styling your home using pillows is texture. Pillows are available in a wide range of options and there are several cozy fabrics that I gravitate to during the colder months such as velvet, flannel and sherpa. Here are a few of my cozy Urban Barn favourites!
Fashion and home décor go hand in hand, and plaid flannel fabric remains a fall staple in both! The Janson pillow looks like your favourite flannel shirt in pillow form.
The Hartman velvet pillow is a luxurious choice that still feels soft and cozy - and it comes in three beautiful colors.
If you are only going to allow yourself one new pillow this season, look no further than the Taylor Teddy pillow. As the name would suggest, it feels like a soft teddy bear for your couch! It is a neutral and stylish piece that goes well with anything.
An honourable mention to the pillow category is the versatile pouf. I incorporate these into many my living room designs, either as extra seating, a footrest or, with the addition of a tray, as a side table. The softness of a pouf is what makes it so comfortable and contributes to the feeling of coziness in a room.
Getting cozy with throw blankets
Throw blankets are another key component to creating comfort in your home. Just like with toss pillows, this season’s blankets come in so many colours and textures and you can use to warm up both living and bedroom spaces. I would even go so far as to say that throw blankets are the most essential décor item because of their functionality. There is nothing better than feeling the weight and warmth of a throw blanket when it’s time to curl up on the couch after a long day.
I incorporate throw blankets into my styling year-round, but during the cooler months I gravitate towards chunky knits, wool textures and bouclé. Yes, you read that right, bouclé blankets! Remember the pillow I said that felt like a teddy bear? Picture it in blanket form… can you think of anything more cozy? If you are looking to invest in a stylish blanket for your home this fall, my top three picks are the Matis Boucle Throw, the Kennedy Check Throw, and the Keaton Chunky Knit Throw.
Bringing comfort into the bedroom
Just like with my sofas, I like to switch up the textiles on our beds when the seasons change. This is another opportunity to lean into textures! Adding a velvet quilt to the end of your bed looks and feels so luxe this time of year. It also adds weight to your bedding which can provide that same cozy feeling that has made weighted blankets so popular! The Bacall Velvet Bedspread comes in two colours and looks beautiful draped across your bed.
If you want to add a pretty pattern to your bedroom, the Bess Cotton Duvet cover is a gorgeous choice. With its neutral colour palette and soft botanical design, it elevates the style factor on one of the most key pieces of bedding in your room.
Creating warmth with candles
When it comes to bringing warmth and comfort to any space, the magic of candles should not be overlooked. Pillars, tea lights, and tapers are all simple candles that can add warmth and a cozy glow when you light them. Combined with a pretty vessel or candle holder, you have a functional and stylish accessory for your home.
Scented candles are next level in terms of creating a cozy vibe because they add warmth and make your house smell great at the same time! During a recent shopping trip to my local Urban Barn store, I was in search of some scented candles that would be fitting for the fall and winter seasons and my top two picks were “Lodge” in the Snow Day scent and ‘Comfort Candle” in the Fireside scent.
