How to decorate your home for spring
I am drawn to classic, neutral furniture pieces. Not only do they tend to remain relevant for years to come, but they create the perfect canvas for whatever accessories are on-trend or in-season. For example, a sofa is an investment piece that should last you 10 years or more, but a toss pillow or throw blanket can be swapped out easily. When I think about decorating for the seasons, I think about what home décor items I can add (or subtract) to make the indoors align with what’s happening outdoors.
I always take cues from Mother Nature when it comes to design, but this is especially true when transitioning my home through the seasons. While winter is a time for hunkering down and hibernating, spring is a season of renewal and rebirth. Just like your wardrobe, it’s the perfect time to swap out some of your heavier winter accessories and incorporate some light and colourful accents into your home.
When it comes to spring decorating, the first thing that comes to mind is colour. Depending on where you live, you’re likely (hopefully!) starting to see some spring flowers like tulips and daffodils, even if only at the grocery store. The natural beauty outside serves as inspiration for how we can transition our homes from winter to spring.
Today I’m sharing some easy & budget-friendly spring decorating ideas with you!
Florals
Paired with a beautiful vase or vessel, seasonal faux florals are an impactful way to transition your house from one season to the next. Unlike grocery store tulips that struggle to last a week, quality faux stems will last for years to come. In my home, I have spring faux florals scattered throughout my home. I love these soft and pretty faux tulips, and I played around with styling them in my formal living room and my family room.
Pussy willows are another stem associated with spring, and they look great in a tall vase on a mantle. I actually love them in this vintage demi-john on the floor beside a chair or tucked into a corner.
In terms of placement, I display seasonal florals on my living room mantle, my dining table and my kitchen island. I also enjoy light gray and white ceramic vases when displaying flowers and stems.
While I like to go faux on the inside due to allergies and upkeep, I prefer incorporating real seasonal flowers on my outside front step in a grouping of planters. I love the light color and striped texture of these new planters.
Textiles
You might be wondering how to make your home cozy while decorating for spring, given that the temperature can still be cool early in the season. We still need those key warm layers like duvets and throw blankets this time of year, but the trick is to incorporate lighter weight textiles in soft spring colors. For example, instead of chunky knits and flannel, think lighter woven cotton materials.
Waffle knits are trending in both fashion and home décor, and I am here for it! The texture and softness make this an easy spring trend to get on board with. You can embrace this cozy fabric on a larger scale with a duvet cover - I have heart eyes for this one - or to a smaller degree with a waffle knit throw for the end of your bed. The new Alda cotton duvet set is another favorite - this grey floral pattern paired with a solid yellow throw blanket would be a beautiful way to style your bed for spring!
Throw blankets are essential for both style and function. While spring brings warmer temperatures, it’s still nice to cuddle up with a blanket on the sofa for those chillier nights. I typically gravitate to lighter cotton throw blankets at this time of year, ideally in one of the fresh spring colors noted above.
I have a small obsession with toss pillows because of their ability to instantly transform a basic neutral sofa. Swapping out your toss pillows, or even just the covers, is one of the easiest ways to transition your home through the seasons. I typically pick one or two accent colours that feel “seasonally appropriate” and style my sofa with a minimum of three pillows. This spring I’ve selected a palette of pink, green and cream for our family room sofa. I have combined one bold pattern with some textured solids to add some spring style to our living room.
Rattan & natural woven details
One final suggestion for spring is to incorporate some natural woven textures into your décor. I particularly love rattan and water hyacinth materials as they can be used in so many ways, ranging from storage baskets to placemats.
A tray is a styling staple and you can find them in so many finishes including marble, metal, wood and rattan to name a few. The Keane oval tray feels fresh for spring, especially when combined with some faux tulips in a pretty vase. Add a decorative ceramic candle and you’ve assembled the perfect vignette for a coffee table or console.
The combination of glass and woven details is another trend I’ve been loving lately, including the new Wanderer candle collection. I was immediately drawn to this candle when checking out the new spring items at my local Urban Barn.
