Cozy underfoot: how to warm up a room with rugs
Getting ready for fall means scarves, sweaters and socks. But layers aren’t just for dressing yourself, and can keep your home warm when the weather starts to cool. You’ll need lots of different textiles to make your space cozy through till spring – pillows, drapery, throws – but rugs are our favourite accent for literally and figuratively warming up your home. From slim runners to extra-large area rugs, these home accents keep you layered in warmth and style all year.

Smart rug placement
Bare floors are beautiful. But hardwood, laminate and tile aren’t exactly warm underfoot, especially first thing in the morning. For the best of both worlds — beautiful floors AND warm feet – strategically place rugs wherever you tend to stand barefoot.
Make early mornings a little more bearable with an area rug under your bed or a runner on each side. In the bathroom, an accent rug in front of your sink or vanity adds a pop of colour or pattern to your pre-work routine. The same idea applies in the kitchen. Whether yours is small and narrow or open and spacious, lay down an accent rug or runner in the most used part of your kitchen (usually in front of the sink). Worried about spills? Choose pieces with colour and pattern like the Raj Accent Rug or Obe Runner. Made from reclaimed leather and denim, these recycled pieces bring unique style and texture to bare floors.
Stay extra warm
If warmth is at the top of your rug-buying agenda, consider materials first. Wool rugs are the warmest and most insulating, both for heat and sound. One of our new favourites, the Victor Rug combines warm wool with synthetic viscose, making it warm, durable and easy to care for. Victor’s textured, chunky knit is right on trend and available in easy-to-style neutral colours. For a more casual look, our Shiva Rug combines three natural materials (jute, leather and cotton) for an organic look that still keeps your feet cozy.
Synthetic materials still provide some insulation on bare floors and are a good alternative to wool in high traffic areas or homes with pets and kids. For maximum warmth in the living room, look for a large rug that can fit at least the front legs of all your furniture. This equals more warm feet and (just as importantly) a cohesive, well-styled conversation space.
Texture & pattern
When temperature isn’t an issue, rugs are a still a must for making your room feel complete. This goes all year round, but in fall and winter especially, rugs with texture and pattern make your space look cozy and help tie in accent colours. Combining texture and pattern in versatile neutrals, the Arkun Rug is handwoven to perfection. This is one rug that can definitely roll with the seasons; pair it with plaids and warm colours in the fall and winter, then fresh new colours for spring and summer.
